The North of England Lhasa Apso Club held an Open show at Mypetstop, Leeds on the 14th February 2010 with an entry of 52 dogs making 65 entries,
I can honestly say that I was disappointed at the entry numerically, is this a sign of the economic climate we are to expect? as at this time last year we had exactly twice as many on-line entries for Blackpool Championship show as we have to date.
Having now been involved with this breed for a very short time (4 years) many things intrigue me, they develop like no other breed I know, change at every juncture, some good, some not so good.
As my first judging appointment was some 32 years ago I am no stranger to construction, breed type, balance and condition, particularly in coated breeds. Having judged at all levels many things absorb the mind about this breed, they are not an easy breed to evaluate,
there are many issues to consider. i.e. size the standard states "ideal Height is 10" slightly less for bitches, we exhibited a bitch that was 10.5", she was considered by some to be too small, however, I am a great believer that quality knows no size as balance and breed type is of the upmost importance and you should never sacrifice these for size, but you should be looking for the ideal if at all possible.
One must also determine body ratio, point of Shoulder to point of buttocks to be greater, how greater? As the standard says "balanced and compact" under the same heading (body) are some Lhasa's too long cast today?
Forequarters :- forelegs straight? How straight? Not many Lhasa have straight forelegs. This must be very confusing for the novice exhibitors.
Gait/Movement:- Free & Jaunty. Does this mean bouncy? You can not have a free mover that bounces, or can you? I understand free quite easily, but jaunty I must admit to seeking the definition which I found was, Jolly, Dashing, Cheerful, Lively, Brisk, Merry, Sprightly, Self-confident. But not one mention of bouncy?
All contributions to good movement is the angles fore and aft, as the standard asks for "shoulders to be well laid back" and to compliment this the standard does asks for a "good angulation" in the hind quarters, so therefore well constructed Lhasa's should move out well with a good driving action to follow that would be determined as good balance on producing this type of gait.
I think there is a problem within the breed with front angulation or the lack of it, some I found quite up right in upper arm which would restrict the forward reach and in some cases create too much lift of the front feet.
On a more positive note the breed is so infectious one can not help liking them all for many different reasons.
The above is by no means a criticism of the breed or any particular dog but an observation of the breed standard and the dogs I see today.
The mind boggles at how a novices exhibitor perceive the dog they have just bought to show?
Maybe I'm being the devils advocate?
Minor Puppy Dog - 6
1st Waterhouse's: Chtaura Bend Me Shape Me - Nicely balanced dog that was not too large or too long cast,
very well balanced throughout, good head piece with good pigment, broadish jaw for one so young, pleased in ribbing,
good rear quarters, good free mover with attitude, prepared and presented in excellent condition.
2nd Lawson's: Rishlyn Dances With Wolves - Another really nice youngster, I see by the reserve best dog today, lovely outline with good make and shape,
pretty expression coming from this delightful skull with the best of pigments and quite a broad jaw, good arched neck into good shoulder angulation, but a touch upright in upper arm which didn't give him the forward reach of winner,
he was also a little un-settled on the move I'm sure once settle he will be ok. Scores well bodily with a good tail set and carriage,
presented in tip top condition.
3rd McCosh & Logan's: Luekiki Diemos to Spyanki
Res Horne's Hopeinn's Adrenaline Junkie at Chanceinn
Vhc Edwards & McDougall's: Daraghugh's Smart Cookie
Puppy Dog - 2
1st Pointon & Webster's: Quaytown Share the Wish Best PD & RBPIS - A dog I have judged before and still like today, like his overall make and shape,
quite mature for his age and with a delightful jacket covering this well constructed dog, a really good size for a dog, pleased in head with a well balanced skull dark eye with good pigment but would prefer a touch more oval in shape.
Good arched neck that was held proud, good forehand with well sprung ribbing, good rear quarters that produced his propulsion to excel, presented in mint condition.
2nd Crook's: Nanas Little Darling - Nice size dog that due to his lack of furnishings looked a little narrow but time is on his side and needs to come together,
I thought his head appeared to look rather Tibetan in profile, good dark eyes with a lovely expression, level topline that he held on the move,
he was not happy today as he dropped his tail, I know it's difficult but this does come in the equation when evaluating a dog that should have a tail carriage,
I'm sure this will be ok once he gets more confidence, presented in good clean order.
Junior Dog - 3
1st Barthorpe's: Patarch Hallowein - A really nice parti-colour dog at the ideal height and with the balance of body ratio's required to give harmony,
pleased in head with the best of pigments and a medium sized eye giving a delightful expression, good arched neck that held up well,
good forehand that produced a good forward reach, lovely body for one so young with a firm topline, good rear quarters with the width to look impressive on going away.
Abundance of good quality coat and prepared and presented in pristine condition.
2nd Surtees: Katay Magical Wizard - Nice type youngster a little longer cast than my winner, good head properties which was quite well balanced,
really dark eye with first class pigment, good forequarters and plenty of bone, deep ribbing that went well back, stout loin that was firm,
would prefer him to move a touch wider behind for better effect, coat a little untidy which makes all the difference on final inspection.
3rd Iredale's: Lianderville Angel Delight
Yearling Dog - 3 (1 Abs)
1st Green's: Samorrey Hello Tiger - Quite a sound Parti- Colour dog that is on the top size but very well balanced throughout,
all male head with a strong and broad muzzle, best of pigments, ample neck that held up well, good forequarters and excellent bodily with a good depth of ribbing that went well back,
strong muscled rear quarters with a good propulsion, covered in a good quality jacket that would benefit from a little stripping to give a more natural shape,
presented in good order.
2nd Iredale's: Lianderville Angel Delight - A black boy with good bodily proportions and covered in a very slick jacket that shone with condition,
good dark eye, not too broad in skull, would prefer more width over the foreface and muzzle, ample neck. Level topline,
productive mover in both directions. Presented in tip top condition.
Maiden Dog - 3 (1 Abs)
1st Horne's: Hopeinn's Adrenaline Junkie at Chanceinn - Nice gold boy with a lovely head carriage, all male head without being overdone, good eye very attentive, good balanced head planes,
good arched neck with a good forehand, plenty of bone with good feet, deep body, would prefer a touch shorter in back to give better balance,
good rear quarters that did not let him down, covered in an excellent jacket both on colour and texture, pristine condition.
2nd Crook's: Nanas Little Darling
Novice Dog - 3 (1 Abs)
1st Surtees: Katay Magical Wizard
2nd Crook's: Nanas Little Darling

1st Hamilton's: Gilderdale G'Day - Very shapely dog with a good head carriage, needs more density of coat to give it some bulk in appearance,
pleasing head piece with a very good eye along with good pigment, good arched neck that was held high, a touch too steep in upper arm,
good bodily shape with a level topline, good rear propulsion but a fraction restricted in forward reach,
put down in clean condition throughout.
Post Graduate Dog - 3 (1 Abs)
1st Ogden's: Absosengkye Donny - A very honest dog that lacks for nothing yet excels in nothing, that in my mind gives you a truly balanced dog indeed, I loved his bodily proportions,
nice male head with all the right properties to compete, ample neck, good body with plenty of substance, good rear action,
covered in an abundance of good quality jacket, but would benefit with a little tweak and tuck in the coat department to give him an even better shape than he already has,
prepared and presented in super condition.
2nd McNally's: Angadema Are You Ready - Another very honest dog a touch longer cast than winner but he has lots of quality and plenty to like,
all male head that is strong particularly in foreface, good eye, would benefit with heavier head furnishings which would give him a more Tibetan look,
strong arched neck, plenty of bone with good feet, really good ribbing and well back, very good mover in both directions,
abundance of excellent quality coat. Well presented.

1st Horne's: Hopeinn's Take That at Chanceinn Res Best Dog - A most handsome gold dog that comes into his own on the move,

just the right amount of jacket to compete at the top, handled expertly without any fuss, prepared in pristine condition.
2nd Povey's: Perjena Ice and Fire - A dog I have placed highly in the past, not the natural shape of winner today, nice dog to go over and very mature in body with good proportions,
good head properties, excellent pigment, strong muzzle, just enough neck, a little upright in shoulder which restricted his forward reach,
but he has many other things that are to be appreciated, nicely ribbed so deep and well sprung, good rear quarter that are well muscled,
covered in a gloriously kept coat of quality.

excellent eye with best of pigments, a good arched neck that was well muscled, good shoulders, well matured ribbing that stretched well back,
good tail set and carriage, heavy furnishings that covered his natural shape to good effect, felt he could have given more on the move than he did,
presented in excellent order.
Veteran Dog or Bitch - 3 (2 Abs)
1st Waterhouse's: Ch/Am Ch Chtaura Dream Machine (re-imp) Best Dog/ Res BIS & Best Veteran - One of the most honest Lhasa I have had the good fortune to go over,
he won well under me recently at Driffield Championship show winning veteran stakes, I think he looks better today than he did then,
so well balanced and honest to the core, can't believe he is ten years old. Moves like a spring chicken,
very nice head that is so well balanced with a medium eye that’s well pigmented, arched neck that is so firm, lovely ribbing and in total condition throughout,
good width of rear a joy to watch him go away, presented in supreme condition a credit to owner and breeder.

firm rear quarters when she went away, little sparse in jacket at present, good attitude to the job in hand.
2nd Green's: Samorrey Dancing Queen - Totally different in build, a little more bulky and less legs than winner,
good head with nice medium eyes firm broad muzzle, just enough neck with a good front,

Novice Bitch - 3 (1 Abs)
1st Iredale's: Rienach Lexi at Lianderville - A really smart little bitch I would hazard a guest that she is at least 10" or thereabouts, the ideal size according to the standard,
very feminine in everyway, pleasing head not weak, so sweet in expression good pigment, would have liked a touch longer neck to give her a little better profile,
lovely bodied with a level topline dripping in a good quality jacket, good on the move, but the handler kept losing her off the lead, but to no detriment in this class.
Put down in pristine condition.
2nd Surtees: Katay Mystique - Quite a nice bitch but not the shape or finish of winner,
pleasing head with a feminine expression, good proportions, strong neck and good front and bone, quite a level topline,
